Fun Facts about Butterflies

Did you know that butterflies are the second largest group of insects in the world???
A scientist that collects and studies butterflies is called a lepidopterist. There are so many cool facts to be discovered by you as a lepidopterist.
There are about 6 butterfly families or groups. Before a butterfly comes to life they go through a mysterious change after being born. This mysterious change is called metamorphosis and has four parts. The first part of the cycle is an egg, which hatches into a caterpillar, that becomes a pupa, from which a beautiful butterfly will emerge.
Did you know that butterflies and caterpillars have enemies/many caterpillars are covered with spiny’ hairs ‘ that protect them like armor. Some caterpillars can spray a poison up to 10 inches that can make birds blind. Caterpillars hide very well because they are often the color of the plant they live on. This called camouflage. There are even butterflies that are not poisonous that try to look like butterflies that are poisonous.
A butterfly has a fascinating body. The eyes of a butterfly called compound eyes. The butterfly has 6 legs and 4 wings! Butterflies sip liquid food through the proboscis – their tongue – which unrolls for them to eat. Butterflies have strong muscles that force their wings up and down and allow them to fly.
